The first trimester brings with it a whole host of changes to the pregnant woman— all coming at once. It can be disconcerting at best; overwhelming at worst. Our philosophy is that if you’re prepared for what is coming, it will be easier to face and adjust to the extreme changes.

■     Depending on your pregnancy, the physical changes could be great or subtle, but you will notice a difference in your body.

■     Many of the body changes in the first trimester are easy to live with and shouldn’t upset your routine much.

■     If you are one of the women who have a miserable time physically the first trimester, then talk to your health care professional and get help. Help is only a phone call away. Don’t tough it out—it’s not necessary.

■     Always, always trust your gut intuition. If you think something is wrong, call your doctor or midwife.

■     It would be downright surprising if you didn’t have any emotional ups and owns during this period. The pregnancy aside—simply adjusting to the fact that you’re going to have a baby can cause a lot of stress. Talk to people about your feelings and get a support group in place. If that doesn’t help, enlist the care of a professional.
