Safe sex positions during pregnancy – Precautions in pregnancy

Sex is a wonderful way for couples to remain intimate during pregnancy.
It is usually safe, as long as some guidelines are followed:

  • Women on top position or side lying may be more comfortable as pregnancy advices.
  • Deep penetration should be at the discretion and comfort of the mother.
  • Water or air in the vagina should not be part of any sex play during pregnancy.
  • Understanding, empathy, creativity and humors will be good to love making during pregnancy.
  • A woman should always be able to say no.
  • If a women is at high risk of preterm labour, orgasm, nipple stimulation and intercourse should be avoided as both stimulate release of a hormone which acts on the uterus and makes it contract. This may bring on preterm labour.
  • Avoid intercourse or any sexual activity if advised to do so by the doctor.
  • Intercourse should be avoided if amniotic fluid is leaking, has ruptured, or if there is suspicion that it may be leaking as it would lead to infection of the uterus and amniotic sac.
  • Any sexual contract should be avoided if anyone of you has been exposed to, or has confirmation of a sexually transmitted diseases or HIV. Use condom and a spermicidal is recommended if sexual activity cannot be avoided.
  • It is better to avoid intercourse after 36 weeks of pregnancy.
